March · Part 3 of 12
An overheating engine is an emergency. Continuing to drive can warp cylinder heads, blow a head gasket, and turn a repair into a replacement.
Common causes include a low coolant level, a failing thermostat, a worn water pump, a clogged radiator, a broken cooling fan, a leaking hose, or a failed head gasket.
If your temperature gauge climbs into the red, pull over safely and shut the engine off. Then call for help.
Having this problem? Don't start replacing parts until you know what's wrong.
