Oil Leaks: Small Drip or Serious Engine Problem?

A few drops of oil under a high-mileage vehicle are common and often not urgent. A spreading puddle, a burning-oil smell, or a dropping oil level are different stories.

Leaks can come from the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, oil filter housing, drain plug, or front and rear crankshaft seals.

The question isn't just where it's leaking—it's how fast, and whether oil is reaching hot exhaust components where it can smoke or catch fire.
